2010/08/09: Day 5 news

Weather : 15 degrees Celsius, thunderstorms in the morning , sunny in the afternoon.

After some mechanical problems Saturday afternoon, the engine and transmission were
swapped out overnight and the car was ready to race at 7:00 am Sunday morning. The
endurance event took place just before noon when it was raining. We sent out the car on track
with the slick tires because it wasn’t raining enough. The situation soon changed when a
torrential downpour fell. The officials immediately stopped the race and gave the teams 10
minutes to change to rain tires. The ETS team managed to change all 4 tires in less than 2
minutes. For this achievement, we got the award for the fastest tire change. The endurance race
went well for us since the ETS F2010 car is known to be very fast in the rain, we were 2 seconds
faster than everybody else. Unfortunately, the rain stopped after we finished our endurance
race, making the subsequent teams much faster around the track. We also had no mechanical
problems, unlike some other teams who had to abandon the endurance race.

2010/08/08: Germany 2010 Day 4

Weather: 25 degrees Celsius, sunny, no clouds

Today was a very busy day for the ETS Formula SAE team. The first event of the day was the acceleration event. Our best time was 4.95 seconds, which is one of the fastest among the single-cylinder cars. Then there was the skid pad event, we were delayed because of one of the other team’s cars had an oil spill on the track. We therefore had to wait for the track to be cleaned up before we could run. The track was not at it’s best, but we still managed a time of 5.723 seconds. During this event, we started to have some problems with the transmission.

Weather: 20 degrees Celsius, partially cloudy

This morning the team took part in the design event. The judges who were evaluating us represented companies from the motorsports industry. Our team captain presented the car and it’s main characteristics, he then introduced the members from the team and their different roles. Judges then had 1 hour to evaluate us and ask questions about the chassis, suspension, engine, drivetrain, braking system and tires. Their main job was to evaluate the design and the theory behind the car’s different systems.

The team left Montreal on Monday night at around 8 o’clock on a Montreal-Frankfurt flight with a stop in Brussels. Once in Frankfurt we drove to our hotel in Mannheim, close to Hockenheim. Today we setup out pit garage with the necessary equipment. We also had time to make some adjustments and checks to be sure it is ready for Thursday.

Friday we must go the mandatory tech inspection. We will also take some time to rehearse for the design and cost events which are taking place on Friday.
